Communication is a fundamental part of our daily lives, and speech is one of our main means of communication.

Speech is the ability to produce speech sounds correctly and fluently; language is the ability to understand others and share thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely (American Speech Language Hearing Association, ASHA). Speech Therapy involves helping your child cope with speech and language delays or disorders that can have negative effects on his or her quality of life.

Who needs Speech Therapy?

If your child does not reach developmental milestones on schedule, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem. However, he or she should be evaluated by a health professional.

Red flags for a speech or language delay include:

  • No first words by 15 months
  • No word combinations by 2 years of age
  • Not showing an interest in communicating; failure to respond normally, such as not responding when spoken to
  • Strangers having problems understanding your child's speech by 3 years of age
  • Excessive drooling
  • Problems with control and coordination of lips, tongue, and jaw
  • A sudden loss of speech and language skills

Our Speech Therapy Approach

Our Framework

We adopt the World Health Organization’s (WHO) framework of disability for considering and assessing the strengths and needs of children in a more holistic fashion.

This framework moves away from labelling individuals and focuses instead on building a profile of strength and needs.

We believe that overcoming the difficulties faced by people with delays and disabilities requires interventions to overcome barriers in all three areas.
